Rolex Submariner 16610LV Fat Four - Full Set (+ service papers Rolex)
For sale at Debonar Watches: pre-owned Rolex Submariner 16610LV, full set (plus service papers from Rolex).
This watch, often known as "Kermit Flat 4" (or "Kermit Fat 4"), present a distinctive green bezel.
There are 2 types of Kermit Submariner, with slightly dissimilar designs: the original Kermit 50th anniversary, and the Kermit “Flat 4” (or "Fat 4") edition - as the one here.
This peculiarity (as Rolex did not purposefully produce two slightly differing designs) reflects in the number 4 located above 8 o’clock on the green bezel: it is flat on the upper inside and in a certain sense it appears as if it’s been cut off.
Its delicacy, the fact that this model has been produced only 1 year (2003-2004) and the Serial Y of this specific watch in our collection, make this amazing Rolex a real rarity.
A bit of its story:
In the early 1950s, recreational diving was starting to become a thing: in the middle part of last century, this type of activity was undertaken only by the military with their elite soldiers – often referred to as Frogmen.
Jacques-Yves Cousteau developed the idea for a sporty yet elegant everyday watch that would be waterproof. He saw it as an opportunity to pursue his hobby and expand Rolex’s customer base at the same time.
Development began in earnest and by 1953, Rolex was ready to begin production and testing: one of the most famous tests was done by the inventor and explorer, Auguste Piccard. When he took his Bathyscape deep-diving submarine down to a mind-bending depth of 3,131.8 meters, a specially-designed Rolex went with it.
The watch emerged from the successful dive completely intact and running fine.
The next year, the Rolex Submariner Ref 6204 made its debut at the Basel watch fair.
